2021 Summer Music Camps and Classes

Washington Conservatory of Music’s summer camps and classes will have kids moving, playing, and having fun together. All summer camps are held at our Glen Echo Park location from 9am to 2pm.  All of our summer classes are held online via Zoom.  See individual classes for times.

Registration for all summer camps and classes begins Wednesday, April 21, 2021.

All of our in-person summer camps and most of our summer classes have registration through our Glen Echo Park location.  Click on the “Register” link to be directed to the Glen Echo Park registration page.

Summer Music Camps

Little Star Violin Camp (Ages 4 – 5)

Let your child shine through a fun experience of music and the violin. Children explore the basics of rhythm and sound through musical games, crafts, songs, and movement. Great hands-on introduction to the violin for beginners! Violins and bows provided. Siblings requesting the same camp whose ages fall outside the parameters will be accommodated to the extent possible, with the approval of the teacher.

Around the World Music Camp (Ages 4 – 7)

Learn to know and respect other cultures through their music. From singing folk songs and learning rhythms from around the globe, campers will learn to see the world through the eyes of music.

Fun with Music and Movement Camp (Ages 4 – 7)

Exploring music is fun! Rhythm, pitch, and melody are experienced through singing, listening, moving to music, and crafts!

Little Prince and Princess Singers Camp (Ages 4 – 7)

Students learn to use the young voice through popular songs from classic and recent children’s movies, while developing imagination and having fun with music. Final performance for parents.

Pop Songs for Young Voices Camp (Ages 5 – 8)

Students experience the joy of singing songs from movies and pop charts under expert guidance. Musical crafts, games, and learning about music in general, round out a fun day at the Washington Conservatory.

Fascinating Rhythm Camp (Ages 7 – 11)

Rhythm: the heartbeat of music! Meet the beats of rock, pop, and jazz music through hands-on experience with various percussion instruments such as sticks, cymbals, boom whackers, buckets, and drum sets, too. All instruments provided.

Sing On! Music Camp (Ages 7 – 12)

Does your child love to sing? Young singers need early guidance to protect their youthful voices and set good vocal habits. Children will learn to sing a broad range of fun songs – Broadway, popular, jazz & classical – as well as learning how to move on stage, to breathe, and to sing together with confidence and joy!

Back-to-School All Strings “Boost” Camp (Ages 8 – 12)

Sign up for a fun boost to get your string-player ready to go back to school! Students will receive group string instruction specific to their instrument focusing on basic technique, note reading, and fun ensemble playing. Other enrichment activities include crafts, musical games, and movement activities meant to foster camaraderie with fellow musicians. Students are expected to bring their own violin, viola, or cello. For beginning to advanced string players.

Viola is Cool! Jump-start Day (Ages 10 – 15)

This is an optional day to get a jump-start on the Viola is Cool Camp. This day is particularly helpful for beginners, or for those who want to jump right in! Includes individual attention time with Ms. Becky, our teacher. A viola is provided, if needed. Must be enrolled in the Viola is Cool Camp.

Viola is Cool! Camp (Ages 10 – 15)

It’s fun to play the violin’s bigger sibling – the viola. Enjoy viola perks: school music directors welcome you, beautiful low notes, fewer play your instrument. Viola power – learn why more violinists play viola too! Minimum 1-year violin or viola playing required. A viola is provided, if needed. Please call 301-320-2770 for exceptions for younger students.

General Music

Musical Imagination Station (Ages 3 – 6)

Children and parent/caregiver share creative music, movement, and drama fun. We begin with a musical greeting and a jazzy body warm-up, then explore beat and rhythmic patterns with instruments. Next, we use visuals to travel with Mr. B Box on exciting musical journeys to different places from the moon to a farm. Our return home is celebrated with singing, dancing and playing with our special stuffed animal friends. Our travels cover many elements of music such as steady beat, tempo, pitch, dynamics and timbre.

Bucket Band Rhythm Class (Ages 8 – 11)

With expert guidance, learn the basics of rhythm, percussion, and drums at home. Sticks, buckets, pans, and pails become our rhythmic orchestra. A fun kick start to the world of percussion all around us.

Acoustic Guitar for Beginners (Ages 13+)

Learn a few chords and strums; you’ll be playing satisfying versions of your favorite songs in this fun class. You know a lot about music just from years of listening. Use that knowledge and you’ll be playing by ear in no time at all. Guitar and notebook required.

So you’ve taken beginning guitar or you’ve been playing for a while and want to get to the next level. Learn some finger picking and other techniques that will make your playing more interesting. Use these skills to play songs you love. Guitar and notebook required.

Songs with Friends (Ages 13+)

From blues to Bob Dylan to Bono to Beyoncé and beyond, expand your guitar technique and repertoire while playing great music with others. We all pick suitable songs and learn to play them as individuals and as a group. Ukuleleists welcome too.

Traditional Irish Music

Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Irish Flute and Tin Whistle (Ages 13+)

Combined class for advanced beginning players. Some basic knowledge of the instrument, fingering, simple scales, and simple tunes is required. Explore the rich mostly aural tradition of Irish music and expand your repertoire. Irish tunes learned by ear: jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas. Learn about fingering, ornamentation, breath control, intonation, basic repertoire & listening recommendations. Bring Irish flute or tin whistle in key of D and recording device.

Intermediate to Advanced Irish Flute and Tin Whistle (Ages 13+)

Builds on the Advanced Beginners Irish Flute/Tin Whistle class. Fundamental skills required. Explores additional repertoire, ornamentation, phrasing; also focuses on tone, intonation, breath control, session tunes, learning by ear. We explore jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, and other tuneforms. Minimum age 13. Bring an Irish simple system flute or tin whistle in the key of D and recording device.

Singing

How to Sing – One Hour, Online, Summer Boot Camp for Teens (Ages 13 – 17)

Yes, you can sing! In a group setting, enjoy learning ways to warm up for the best sound and range without hurting your voice. Learn a technique for all styles of music, how to stay in tune, and how posture and breathing help you sing.

Great Black Classical Composers: 18th Century to Today (Ages 18+)

We all know Mozart, but do you know Chevalier de Saint-Georges, called the ‘Black Mozart’? Did you know Beethoven dedicated a sonata to the black composer and violinist George Bridgetower? Guided by the celebrated DC-native composer, Jeffrey Mumford, we will hear and view performances from the varied, captivating, and rich legacies of black composers.
