Heralded by critics and fellow musicians as one of the outstanding pianists of his generation, Argentine-Venezuelan pianist Sergio Daniel Tiempo has quickly risen to international prominence since making his debut at age 14 on the “Great Pianists” series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 1986. He now appears regularly in recitals and with orchestras in the leading halls of Europe, North America, South America and Japan.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, on February 24th 1972, Sergio Tiempo began his piano studies with his mother, Lyl Tiempo, at the age of two years and eight months. He made his first public appearance just a few months later, at the age of three, appeared on Argentine television of the age of four, and gave recitals In London and at the Menton Festival in France at age seven. His awards include the 1986 Alex De Vries Prize of Belgium and four first prizes at the 1980 Ealing Music Festival in London, where, at age eight, he was honored with a special prize as the most talented participant in the competition, and the Davidoff 2000 Prize in Germany.

His engagements in the United States have taken him to such important musical centers as the Ravinia Festival, the Kennedy Center, Davis Symphony Hall in San Francisco and Ambassador Hall in Los Angeles. In Europe he has performed in Berlin's “Philharmonie,” the “Alte Oper” in Frankfurt, Amsterdam’s Cocertgebouw, Rotterdam’s “De Doelen,” the “Palais des Beaux Arts” in Brussels, Salle Pleyel and Gaveau in Paris, the Verdi Conservatory in Milan, the Liszt Accademy in Budapest, the Kiev Conservatory, and Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow.

He has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, New World Symphony, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic,Moscow Soloists, Dallas Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Lyon in France, Belgium’s Philhcrmonlque de Liege as well as with the Tokyo Metropolitan, Philharmonic, and Yomiuri Orchestras. He has made over 7 extensive tours of Japan and made numerous appearances in Buenos Aires, Brazil and Venezuela.

You are invited to just such a Master Class from 6:00 to 7:30 PM this Monday February 25 at Westmoreland Church, One Westmoreland Circle, Bethesda -- FREE of charge!

Three students will perform and receive coaching from cellist Jian Wang: Summer Hu from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Matan Mintz of the University of Maryland, and Emilia McManus of the Washington Conservatory.

Jian Wang might best be described as "the next Yo-Yo Ma." He was discovered in China by violinist Isaac Stern and was featured in the documentary film "Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China." Since then he has toured the world as a soloist and featured artist with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonia, Singapore Symphony and Concertgebouw Orchestra. In the US he has performed with the Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago Symphonies, among others. He is truly one of the most outstanding cellists of our time.
