Marty Nau, former lead alto saxophonist and conductor for the Navy Commodores, is highly in demand as a performer in the Washington DC area. He has played with many big bands including the Blues Alley Big Band, performed with the National Symphony, and backed up performers such as Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Daniels, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Williams and countless others. He is currently a member of the Capitol Quartet, an ensemble that has been featured in concert with the Baltimore Symphony and throughout the US.
Other members of the faculty jazz ensemble include Wayne Wilentz, piano, Howard Kadison, drums, and bassist, Steve Novosel.
Wilentz performed with R & B acts such as the Shirelles, was keyboardist for the funk band SKYY, and has performed as a jazz pianist in major DC venues. Drummer Howard Kadison recorded and performed with Barbra Streisand and regularly performed with Carmen McRae, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, and in jazz festivals and state department tours throughout the world. Bassist Steve Novosel is heard on over 60 recordings. He performed with many jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins, and has accompanied many singers including Betty Carter, Anita O'Day, Roberta Flack, Joe Williams, Billy Eckstein, and Shirley Horn.
The concert will feature the music of Charlie "Bird" Parker, considered one of the most important figures in jazz. Born in 1920, Parker was a self-taught alto saxophonist, known for his remarkable improvisations and credited along with Dizzy Gillespie for the birth of Bebop.
