Thomas Moore was Ireland's national poet during the nineteenth century and his Melodies continue to be a source of national pride. The Thomas Moore Festival was founded in 2008 to mark the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Thomas Moore's Irish Melodies. The festival is dedicated to celebrating Moore's vital contribution to Irish cultural heritage and to promoting exciting emerging Irish singers. The festival has produced a CD recording of all 124 Melodies by Moore.
The concert will feature melodies including The Minstrel Boy, The Meeting of the Waters, Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms and The Last Rose of Summer.
Performing on the concert are rising Irish vocal stars Dean Power (tenor), Katy Kelly (soprano), Rachel Kelly (mezzo soprano), and Aoife O'Sullivan (soprano). These singers have performed individually with the Opera Ireland, Opera Theatre Company, English National Opera, the RTE Concert Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, among others.
The singers will be accompanied by leading Irish pianist, Dr. Una Hunt, a recognized expert on nineteenth century Irish composers. Ms. Hunt is a frequent performer throughout Europe and North America with prominent artists including Irish flautist James Galway.
Soprano Aiofe O'Sullivan (pictured above) is Irish-born and has performed all over Ireland and the U.K. She has sung as a soloist in the National Concert Hall in Dublin fifteen times and made her television debut on RTE's The Late Late Show. She has won many awards including the John McCormack recital competition.
The concert program presented for the Washington Conservatory on Saturday, March 13, will be repeated in New York on Monday, March 15, at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Both concerts are sponsored by Culture Ireland, the Irish State Agency that promotes the best of Ireland's arts and culture internationally and assists in the development of Ireland's international cultural relations.
Parking
Parking is on-street on Massachusetts and Western Avenues and in the parking lot of Westmoreland Congregational UCC church.
