This year, 2009, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. To honor his memory, Julia Bogorad-Kogan, principal flute of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, will be joined by her son, Minnesota Orchestra violist Benjamin Ullery, and pianist Margo Garrett. Offering commentary at the concert will be the mother of Julia and the grandmother of Ben, Hope Castagnola Bogorad, one of the few living friends of Martinu and the person for whom he wrote "Merry Christmas 1941 to Hope Castagnola" for solo piano -- thus " Three Generations Celebrate Martinu."
The concert will include Martinu's First Sonata for flute and piano (1951), Sonata No. 1 for viola and piano (1955), Merry Christmas 1941 to Hope Castagnola for solo piano, and Trio for flute, cello and piano (1950) - with the cello part transcribed for viola by Louis Moyse with the permission of the composer. Also presented on the program is Albert Roussel's Joueurs de Flute pour flute et piano, opus 57 (1925).
Winner of a Grammy Award for best recording of chamber music, Julia Bogorad-Kogan became principal flutist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra at the age of twenty-two.
A Washington, DC native, Bogorad-Kogan played in the DC Youth Orchestra for six years, and attended Woodrow Wilson High School.
Bogorad-Kogan has combined an orchestral career with frequent solo and recital appearances in major music capitals. As a concerto soloist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, she is heard frequently on National Public Radio. She has performed on the nationally syndicated radio show St. Paul Sunday and at the Marlboro, Ravinia, and Grand Teton music festivals.
She served as acting principal flutist of the Boston Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Her two CDs on the Fullharmonic label, Handel Flute Sonatas and Flute Music of the Paris Conservatory with Margo Garrett, piano, have won critical acclaim. She taught at the Oberlin Conservatory, and is currently on the faculty of the University of Minnesota School of Music. Her teachers included Marcel Moyse, Thomas Nyfenger, Robert Willoughby, and James Pellerite.
Pianist Margo Garrett has collaborated with a large roster of international artists, including violinists Jaime Laredo and Daniel Phillips; violist Paul Neubauer; cellists Sharon Robinson, Matt Haimowitz, and Stephen Kates; and sopranos Kathleen Battle, Judith Raskin, Lucy Shelton, and Dawn Upshaw.
Violist Ben Ullery has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 2007, has often performed with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Ullery is a 2004 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory where he received both the Pi Kappa Lambda Musicianship Award and the Hurlbutt Award for outstanding string playing.
Parking is on-street on Massachusetts and Western Avenues and in the parking lot of Westmoreland Congregational UCC church.
